Observing your life is key to identifying how you can reshape your future. Are you marching to the beat of someone else's drum or do you call the tunes?

Are you spending enough time on the balcony of your life or too much time on the dance floor?

Are you wrapped up in everything that is going on around you?  Are you always on the ‘dance floor’ of life with a constant humdrum of fast-paced jobs, demanding home lives, the ‘always on’ digital world? Living like this can be equated to being in a packed heaving nightclub; it’s so easy to get caught up in the music often cued by external events and those close to us. Perhaps, now is the time to step back and take a fresh look at what you do and how you spend your time.

How does your day begin? Does the alarm clock go off like a starting gun, propelling you into a frantic frenzy of activity – running through the playbook in your mind of all the things you need to do today?

Sometimes you’re dancing by yourself, wrapped up in a specific issue. Other times you’re fully engaged with those around you. Sometimes you’re even dancing to multiple tunes trying to spin plates as your aim to fulfil everyone's expectations. It can seem as if someone else has control of the music deck and is skipping through the songbook, and you’re the one who's trying to keep up.

Having the ability to step off the dancefloor so you can observe from the balcony of life provides excellent opportunities to rebalance and re-energise.

The balcony is a metaphor for solitude, a place in which you can reflect on, and become self-aware of the part you are playing in your own life. To stand back and make conscious decisions about how you will shape your future in all areas of your life. It's a place where you can develop the invaluable knack of dispassionately monitoring your own mental, emotional and physical state as you interact with the world around you.

There is no time better than now, to take a helicopter view, reflect and review the past 12 months; what has worked well and what hasn’t gone as you would have liked – both personally and professionally.

Our ability to focus on the things that matter in our lives can be the difference between hitting our goals and being massively off track.

We can all say we are busy, but the key is using your time wisely and ensuring that you are productive. It's time to review, reflect and make cuts. Focus on what supports your steps to achieve your goals. It's all down to you to make the right choices. Your time is precious - use it wisely.

take action; achieve more
  • Stop what you are doing and take time to look at your life from a different perspective. Rise above the humdrum of your chaotic existence, review where you are heading, and how daily activities lead you to success. If you are busy being busy, it's time to take stock
  • Less is more, is it time to cull time-wasters from your life? It may be people or activities or your lack of focus. Write down how much time you spend on all the extra things in life. Time is money, can you make savings?
  • Once you have established where you want to go next, commit to it. The only person who can make your dreams a reality is you!
